ImageKenya is the world's biggest producer of pyrethrum contributing about 80% of the world production. Demand has been increasing due to the increased awareness by consumers on the impact of synthetic substitutes on the environment. Annual pyrethrum production in Kenya averages between 3,000 to 6,000 tonnes. On the other hand the total pyrethrin extracted is estimated on average at about 150 tonnes.

Kenya exports both the pyrethrum extracts and the finished products including

  • Insecticides for controlling household insects and mosquitos. The major products under this category include mosquito coils, insecticide aerosols, mosquito repellent vapour mats and insecticide powder
  • Rodenticides
  • Acaricides for control of animal pests
  • Agricultural pesticides

The major export market for pyrethrin extracts are the USA, Germany, UK and Japan among others.
On the other hand the finished products derived from pyrethrin extracts are exported to the COMESA market. Some of the export destinations in COMESA include Uganda, Tanzania, Sudan, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia and Mauritius. Others in Africa include South Africa.
